DTECH DVI Male to HDMI Female Adapter

A cheap, plain DVI to HDMI bridge for video only, with no audio and no high refresh.

The short version

Buy it if
  • Anyone connecting an HDMI laptop, console or box to an older DVI monitor
  • PCs with a DVI graphics output feeding an HDMI TV or projector
  • People who already own an HDMI cable and need to bridge the last plug
Skip it if
  • You need audio to reach the TV or monitor speakers
  • You want 144 Hz, or 1440p at high refresh; use DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0 end to end

What owners like

  • Plug and play with no software
  • Compact coupler that sits directly on a graphics card or monitor port
  • Screws keep the connection from working loose

Common complaints

  • No sound over the connection, so a separate audio cable or an HDMI audio extractor is needed
  • Cannot reach high refresh rates; listings state it cannot handle 144 Hz
  • DVI bandwidth limits mean 1440p at high refresh is out of reach with any passive DVI adapter

Based on Newegg and iBhejo product listings with the maker's description, the Amazon listing title, a WhatCableWorks explainer on DVI bandwidth and a Tom's Hardware forum thread on DVI and HDMI refresh limits; no editorial review of this exact adapter was found.

What it does

A small passive coupler with a 24+1 pin DVI-D male plug on one side and an HDMI female port on the other, for joining DVI and HDMI gear in either direction.

  • Works both ways, so one adapter covers an HDMI laptop on a DVI monitor or a DVI card on an HDMI TV
  • Thumbscrews and grip treads hold it firmly in the DVI port
  • Gold plated contacts, which the maker says resist corrosion
  • Plugs into both DVI-D (24+1) and DVI-I (24+5) female ports
  • Cables are not included; an HDMI or DVI cable is needed

A cheap, simple fix for hooking an HDMI cable to a DVI graphics card or monitor, or the other way round, for ordinary video use. The trade-offs come from DVI itself: no audio passes through, and the DVI side sets the ceiling on resolution and refresh rate, so it is not a route to high refresh gaming at 1440p. Anyone needing sound or high refresh rates should use HDMI or DisplayPort end to end.

Questions

Does a DVI to HDMI adapter carry audio?

No. DVI has no native audio, so sound has to go through a separate cable. The maker suggests an HDMI audio extractor if you need it.

Will this adapter do 144 Hz?

No. Listings for this adapter state it cannot handle 144 Hz. Even dual-link DVI tops out around 144 Hz at 1080p and about 75 Hz at 1440p.

Does it work in both directions?

Yes. It is bi-directional, so it can send an HDMI source to a DVI display or a DVI source to an HDMI display.

Will it fit a DVI-I port?

Yes. The maker says it fits both DVI-D 24+1 and DVI-I 24+5 female ports.

Does it need drivers or power?

No. It is a passive adapter with no drivers.
