Samsung 980 PRO 1TB (MZ-V8P1T0B/AM)

A fast PCIe 4.0 drive that now makes sense only below the price of newer rivals.

The short version

Buy it if
  • PC builders on AM4, AM5 or recent Intel boards with a PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot
  • Anyone upgrading from a SATA SSD or hard drive who finds it priced below newer drives
  • Owners of PCIe 3.0 systems planning a later platform upgrade
Skip it if
  • The 990 PRO or SN850X costs about the same, since both are newer and faster
  • You need a heatsink for a console or a hot case; look for the heatsink version instead
  • You don't want to deal with checking and updating firmware

What owners like

  • Among the fastest consumer drives at launch, with strong write and random performance
  • Runs cooler than early PCIe 4.0 rivals at idle and typical loads
  • Long warranty and mature Samsung software

Common complaints

  • Write speed drops sharply once the SLC buffer is full during large transfers
  • Temperatures can pass 80C under heavy sustained transfers, so Samsung recommends cooling for heavy use
  • A firmware bug (3B2QGXA7) caused rapid health loss and read-only failures, mostly on 2TB units, fixed by firmware 5B2QGXA7
  • Priced above rivals at launch, and now outpaced by newer drives

Based on Samsung's US product page, editorial reviews from StorageReview and The SSD Review, a NAS Compares report on the firmware fault, and a StoredBits comparison of current rivals.

Research scores

Performance 8.5 7,000 MB/s reads and strong random speed, though writes slow once the SLC buffer fills
Build quality 7.0 DRAM cache and 600 TBW, but a firmware fault caused failures on some drives
Ease of use 8.0 standard M.2 install and Magician software, with a firmware check needed
Value 6.5 newer 990 PRO and SN850X are faster for similar money

What it does

A 1TB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid state drive from Samsung, now an older generation that has been followed by the 990 PRO.

  • PCIe 4.0 speeds on supported boards, and works on PCIe 3.0 slots at lower speed
  • Full 1GB DRAM cache for steady random performance
  • Intelligent TurboWrite 2.0 SLC buffer for fast bursts of writes
  • Samsung Magician software for firmware updates and drive health checks
  • Bare drive with no heatsink in this model number

A fast, well reviewed PCIe 4.0 drive for a desktop, laptop or console upgrade, rated for up to 7,000 MB/s reads with a full DRAM cache and a 5-year warranty. The trade-offs are age and history: the newer 990 PRO and WD Black SN850X write faster, and a firmware fault that mostly hit 2TB units means any 980 PRO should be updated through Samsung Magician right away. Samsung's US store lists the 1TB model as out of stock, so it mostly makes sense when found at a lower price than its successors.

How it compares

WD Black SN850X 1TBClose to 990 PRO speed with the same endurance and warranty, often for less money$$

Worth knowing

  • Update to the latest firmware with Samsung Magician; a firmware update stops further health loss but does not repair a drive that has already degraded or failed.
  • Samsung recommends a cooling solution for sustained heavy workloads.

Questions

Is the Samsung 980 PRO still worth buying?

Only at a clear discount. It is still a fast PCIe 4.0 drive, but the 990 PRO and WD Black SN850X are newer and write faster.

Does the 980 PRO firmware problem affect the 1TB model?

Reports say the 3B2QGXA7 firmware fault mostly hit 2TB drives but lower capacities were not immune. Drives on 4B2QGXA7 or 5B2QGXA7 are not affected. Update through Samsung Magician.

Will the 980 PRO work in a PCIe 3.0 slot?

Yes. It is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0, at PCIe 3.0 speeds.

Does the 980 PRO need a heatsink?

Not for typical use, but it can pass 80C under heavy sustained transfers and Samsung recommends cooling for heavy workloads.
