3M 6001 Organic Vapor Cartridge (1 Pair)

A basic, low cost vapor cartridge for brushing and rolling finishes, not for spraying on its own.

The short version

Buy it if
  • Owners of 3M 6000, 6500 or 7500 Series masks
  • DIYers brushing or rolling oil based paint, stain, varnish or adhesives
  • People cleaning parts with solvent degreasers
Skip it if
  • You are spraying paint or sanding, unless you add a prefilter
  • Your chemicals include acid gases, ammonia or formaldehyde
  • You want a built in P100 filter in one part; buy the 60921

What owners like

  • Lowest cost way into 3M's cartridge system
  • Easy breathing since there is no particulate layer
  • Fits every 3M bayonet mask, so one stock of cartridges covers several masks
  • A common pick for finishing work when paired with a prefilter

Common complaints

  • Does nothing for dust or paint overspray on its own
  • No fixed service life, so change out timing depends on the job and a change schedule
  • Keeps absorbing once out of the sealed bag, so opened cartridges need airtight storage

Based on 3M's 6000 Series data sheet, the Amazon listing, product pages from Fisheries Supply and ASA Safety Supply, a WC Safety review and a Sawmill Creek woodworking forum thread..

What it does

A pair of black activated carbon cartridges that fit 3M bayonet respirators and are NIOSH approved for certain organic vapors, with no particulate filtering.

  • Activated carbon bed adsorbs certain organic vapors
  • Swept back shape that helps field of view and balance, per 3M and distributors
  • Twists onto any 3M bayonet half or full facepiece
  • Accepts 3M 5N11 or 5P71 prefilters with the 501 retainer for dust and mist
  • Accepts 2000 and 2200 Series P100 filters with the 502 adapter

The basic cartridge to buy for brushing or rolling solvent based paints, stains, adhesives and degreasers in a 3M 6000, 6500 or 7500 mask. It filters vapors only, so dust, sanding and spray mist need a P95 or P100 prefilter added, or the combined 60921 cartridge instead.

Questions

Is the 3M 6001 good for spray painting?

Not on its own, because it does not filter particles. Add a 5P71 or 5N11 prefilter with the 501 retainer, or use the 60921, which combines organic vapor and P100 protection.

What is the difference between 3M 6001 and 60921?

Both cover certain organic vapors. The 60921 adds a built in P100 particulate filter.

How long does a 3M 6001 cartridge last?

There is no fixed time. Service life depends on vapor concentration, breathing rate, humidity and temperature, so a change out schedule and the package instructions apply.

Does the 3M 6001 fit the 6200 mask?

Yes. It fits 3M bayonet facepieces in the 6000, 7000 and FF-400 Series, including the 6200.
